IPI engages Soche Technical students

Political scientist, Ernest Thindwa has challenged the youth to earn their political stand by voting for their fellow youngsters in the September 16 General Election in order to achieve the required 30% parliamentary and local councillor representation.

Thindwa was speaking during an interaction with students at Soche Technical College in Blantyre, which was organised by the Institute for Policy Interaction (IPI) on 23rd May 2025.

He noted that over the years, Malawi has failed to attain the target due to lack of awareness.

IPI Executive Director Nandine Patel said the time has come for the youth to exercise their right to vote while defending the democracy of this country.

Statistics have shown that in the 2020 General Election, only one person under the age of 35, which is deemed the youth category, was voted on a party ticket as a parliamentarian, representing 0.7%.

The activity is part of the ongoing Malawi Electoral Support Project with the funding from the United Nations Development Programme.

IPI Executive Director Prof Nandini Patel has thanked the management of Soche for hosting the event.

She said the panelists focused on crucial electoral issues.

She adds that it is important to engage youths and voters on issues of elections.

“Every election is important because it comes every five years,” she says.
