IPI Director named Trustee of ASLI

Professor Patel stressing a point.

The Executive Director of the Institute for Policy Interaction Professor Nandin Patel has been named as the Trustee for the newly found Association for Sign Language Interpreters, (ASLI).

She has meanwhile advised policy makers to accommodate everyone in the communities when conducting various activities like elections, including people with disabilities.

Patel said this during an awareness campaign the Association conducted over the weekend at Soche Technical college in Blantyre where they interacted with sign language students at the institution and discussed on possible professional partnerships with other sign language interpretation organisations like Sign Language for Development (SLID), Tsogolo Lowala, among others, to ensure inclusivity of the disabled including the deaf people in spearheading the country’s development.

Patel said it is important for policy makers to notice the efforts these organisations are making in standing by the rights of the marginalized hence calling for recognition and inclusion in crucial activities like the forthcoming 16 September general elections.

ASLI’s Trustees Board Chairperson Alhajj Dr Twaibu Lawe has punched in more weight to Patel’s sentiments by calling for collaborative efforts starting from within the association and urged other sign language interpreters to register with the association to be acknowledged and help take sign language to greater heights.
